While 10-game schedule on Monday came three teams scoring 15 runs (D'backs, Mariners and Marlins), 15-card game on Tuesday saw two teams reach the mark of 10 runs (Dodgers and Tigers). Tuesday also had four shutouts (two sets of 1-0, a game of one game 2-0 and 9-0), including the fourth game 1-0 in 12-year history of Coors Field.

My free play for Wednesday is for the Florida Marlins to the New York Mets at 7:05 ET. I'm starting 15 * day with delight in the afternoon and closing the show with one of my new (this year) Technical Insiders, supported by four pitchers in team situation and trends that are gaining 69-76 percent.

One day after playing the best game in the history of the stadium on Monday (Colorado a 4-2 win over Milwaukee, which lasted only two hours and six minutes), the Brewers beat the Rockies 1-0 last night. It is clear that there is something at Coors Field this year, as this was the 1-0 third game played in 2006 (only one before this season). The teams have combined to average 9.09 runs per game at Coors this year, a decrease 33 percent from its peak a decade ago.

Also of note yesterday was Chase Utley extended his hitting streak to 33 straight games and become the Justin Verlander winner of five major first 14 games. Utley hitting streak is tied for the ninth longest streak in National League history. Verlander 10-4 victory over the Devil Rays (14-4, 2.79) was Detroit's 71st of the season.

The victory total matches last year's team. Detroit had entered the 2006 season with an average of only 61.4 wins per season over the past five years, a stretch that includes the brand team of 43-119 in 2003. I guess it's safe to say that Jim Leyland was hire good!

San Francisco Giants have moved from a half-game lead in the division and a five-season run of victories to their worst skid in 10 years – all in a span of 11 days. The Giants owned a half-game lead over the D'backs on 22 July, but after last night's 4-1 loss the Nationals have lost nine straight games. It is the longest active streak in the majors and the team with the worst losing streak since a 10-game streak in June 1996.

The Pirates lost to the Braves 4-2 last night, ending a more active MLB winning streak at five games. The new "leader in the clubhouse is, do not believe it, the Dodgers of Los Angeles. Yes, the same Dodgers entered last weekend with an eight-game losing streak and a 1-13 record since the break, now own longest winning streak in the MLB active (four straight), after its 10-4 victory last night in Cincinnati. Things change quickly!

Wednesday schedule is more complete with the 30 teams in action, including four starts in the afternoon. TV games include the D'backs on the Cubs at 8:05 ET on WGN and the Phillies cards at 8:00 ET, as Utley is 34 straight games with a hit. The Indians / Red Sox (7:05 ET) raises an interesting pitching duel.

Boston rookie Jon Lester opened the year going 5-0 with an ERA of 2.38 in his first seven starts, but in his last two outings, allowed 19 hits and 10 ERs in 11.1 innings of work for an ERA of 7.94. Exit Cleveland is another rookie, Jeremy Sowers. Sowers is 3-3, 3.98 in six starts this year, but enter this contest bleached back-to-back "He is the first rookie to do so since Dontrelle Willis did for the Marlins in 2003.

Linking loose ends of the notes from yesterday. Of the eight rookies who led their respective leagues in ERA from 01 August (see complete list of files), three won the ERA title this year. Wilcy Moore Yankees 1927 (I kind of remember that being a good year for someone!) Won the ERA title with an ERA of 2.28 and a record of 19-7 (13 saves). I only had a six-year career, finishing with a 51-44 mark, a 4.33 ERA and 49 saves.

Gary Peters, White Sox won the 1963 ERA title with an ERA of 2.33, finishing 19-8. Peters had a career of 14 years (124-103, 3.25), which included a period of 20 wins in 1964 and a second title in 1966 ERA (1.98). Mark "The Bird" Fidrych also won the title of effectiveness for the Tigers in 1976, finishing the season with a 2.34 ERA and a 19-9 record. Unfortunately, due to injuries, which launched in parts of only four seasons again, is only 10.10 (4.28).

NFL notes

As I prepare for a preview of the 2006 NFL season, let's take a quick look at the account pointspread last year. Suffice it to say, the 2005 season will be best remembered as the "Year of the favorites." The final tally looks like this, based against the closing line at the Stardust.

Home favorite finished 94-75-5 ATS, or 55.6 percent. Road favorites were an incredible 48-29-4 ATS, or 62.3 percent (probably the best of all time!). One of the games (SD / KC in Week 16) closed to choose, in a game won by the home team. In general, the favorites finished the 2005 NFL season 142-104-9, or 57.7 percent winners
