The project of the National Basketball Association
(NBA) thirty teams (29 in the United States and one in Canada) can select Association young players who wish to join the league. These players usually come from college level, but in recent drafts a greater number of school players high international and have been drafted. From the NBA Players 2006 Draft high school eligibility for the selection of winning the draft a year after their graduating class has finished high school, but only if they also are at least 19 years of age at the end of the calendar year of the project.
The NBA draft is currently divided into two rounds, with thirty selections per round. The order of selection is based on several standards. The first project selections belong to the fourteen teams that did not make the playoffs in the season. These teams participate in a lottery to determine the order of the first three selections. Each team is assigned a number of possibilities based on positions of the season to "win" the lottery. After these three teams have been determined, the remaining selections are divided based on regular season record with the worst teams getting the highest remaining selections. This lottery assures each team can make no more than 3 positions from its position proposed project. The lottery also prevents teams to launch the season to ensure a first-round draft pick.
The following sixteen spots in the project are reserved for teams that did in that playoff season. The order of selection of the sixteen teams "is determined by its history of victories and defeats of the season, going from worst to best. Therefore, the team with the best record selects last. The team with the best record is not necessarily Champion, for example, in the NBA in 2004, the last selection is not passed to the 2004 NBA champion Detroit Pistons, but the Indiana Pacers (This differs from the NFL Draft, where the Super Bowl champion always draws the final selection of the first round).
The order of selections in the second round positions are also based on the season, with the worst team, and choose the best last harvest. There is no lottery for the second round. Teams are allowed to trade future draft choices (first and second round) as current players.
League rules prohibit a team from trading with their own future peaks in the first round in consecutive years. This rule was created partly in reaction to the practices of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1980s. Ted Stepien, who owned the team from 1980 to 1983, he made a series of operations for players of questionable value that cost the team several years of first-round picks. The trades nearly destroyed the franchise, the NBA Stepien pressured to sell out, and in order to obtain a solid local owner (Gordon Gund), the league had to sweeten the offer, giving the Cavaliers of several peaks in future reclamation projects.
All U.S. players are automatically eligible at the end of his college eligibility. Through 2005, U.S. players were also allowed to declare eligibility for the project at any time between graduation from high school and completion of college eligibility. International players could declare eligibility in the calendar year of their 18th birthday or later.
From 2006 NBA Draft, the eligibility rules have changed:
• All players, regardless of nationality, must have at least 19 years age during the calendar year of the project.
• A U.S. player must also have at least one year removed from the graduation of his high school class.
The age limit for recruits is part of the new collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players union.
The NBA has established two draft declaration dates. All players who wish to be drafted, and are not automatically eligible, must declare their eligibility on or before the date of the first statement.
After that date, potential recruits may attend the NBA draft camps and individual team workouts to show their skills and obtain information their positions on the project. A player can withdraw his name from consideration of the project at any time prior to the date of final declaration, which is one week before the draft. A player who declares for the project will lose his college eligibility, even if it has not been chosen, if any of the following:
• The player signs with a agent.
• The player has declared for and withdrawn from the project in any previous year.
When a player is selected in the first round of the project, the team that drafted him is required to sign at least a one-year contract. Players selected in the second round are "owned" by the team for three years, but teams are not required to sign them.
The players chosen in the previous draft are generally considered better prospects than those selected later, but there is always a level of uncertainty about the selections. past projects are full of examples of the superstars of the late peak and early selection busts. Perhaps the most famous example of the uncertainty of the project occurred in 1986 when Karl Malone was selected by the Utah Jazz with the selection XIII, but became the second leading scorer in NBA history to win multiple MVP awards. His teammate, John Stockton, was selected XVI last year, but became the leader of the NBA's all-time in assists and steals.
