The Christmas holiday season in Spain is a truly magical affair. Although not leaving until the last moment apparently, the Spanish launch wholeheartedly into the spirit of things and the festivities finally culminate on January 6.

The true mark of the beginning Christmas in Spain is the Spanish national lottery draw held on 22 December. 'El Gordo' or the fat one, is so called because it is the largest the national lottery in the world with the total prize fund of implementation in billions and also has the best chance of winning. In general, celebrations usually start early evening when friends and family gather in pubs for a drink before returning home to the main event. As most Christmas meals, Spanish involves a lot of preparation, many courses, many to drink and lasts all night.

Christmas Midnight Mass in Spain is known as "La Misa del Gallo" or "Rooster Mass", because the rooster was the first to announce the birth of Christ. Once the food and the mass is more, people return home to exchange gifts. Children often only receive a small gift as a "Santa Claus" is less popular than the Three Kings who arrive on 5 January, with gifts for all children. The night or morning, usually ends in a bar or nightclub where whole families gather to celebrate the festival and once the family festivities are over.

Christmas Day is a quiet affair and the quietest in Spanish calendar. People gather for a stroll or enjoy a drink and while many continue the celebrations with a meal in a restaurant, most people are still recovering from the night before. In Catalonia, there is a wonderful tradition on Christmas day that goes by the name "Uncle." Basically a decorated log or tree trunk is "fed" with sweets and other goodies during the few days before Christmas and then the day, the children sing traditional Catalan Christmas song and beat the guy with a stick when there is candy and other treats for the whole family.

Soon after the day Christmas December 28 is another curious unique celebration of Spain called "The Day of the Innocents." Although the origins of this holiday are the murder of women and children committed by Herod in Judea, the celebrations today are similar to the April fools day in a much larger scale. New Year's Eve or 'Eve' in Spain is celebrated both as elsewhere with a few exception. Once the grapes have been given multiple meals and kisses, the part that really begins. Again, all families of young to old can be seen in bars and clubs to celebrate the New Year come to the first hours.

For Spanish children, the best day of the festival season has to be 5 and 6 January. While the rest of us are far from packing and decoration tired of the trees, the Spanish children everywhere are preparing for the arrival of the Magi. In Spain it is not Santa Claus who brings the children their gifts, but the Magi or "Wise Men" On January 5, the eve of Epiphany the children go to local parades, to herald the arrival of the Magi. Each village is decorated parade floats with a variety of topics and candy and streamers being thrown into the crowd. At the end of the parade, children have the opportunity Kings to make gift of your choice and then leave their shoes at night in what will be his gift placed. In many villages, however, the Three Kings parade culminates at a meeting in the local church or school room where each child's name called out and receive a small gift. On 6 January is a holiday national, as well as Christmas day and the children wake up to gifts left by the Magi. The traditional dessert of the day is called "Rosca de los Reyes" and is a home style bakery jellies ring decorated with colors to symbolize the jewels worn by the Magi. Christmas celebrations in Spain are Fantastic is what I like things as they are not marketed as they are in the UK for example. Walking down the road in early December, would hardly mind that Christmas is just around the corner, there are very few Christmas ads on TV and it seems centuries before the lights and decorations up. However once the fever takes over, to spoil by the generosity of Christmas spirit given to you by local people, you get gifts in stores and free tipple at City Hall, the lights and decorations appear as if by magic, is not music to be heard and people seem to have suddenly to the streets and squares just to wish him well and enjoy the atmosphere that comes right out until January.

On January 6 marks the end of the Christmas celebrations in Spain and then as elsewhere, it is time to return to the same age. But worry about the next party is just around the corner …
