Green Card?

I am a Canadian citizen looking to get a green card.
Obviously Canadians are ineligible for the lottery, and I am not planning to marry anyone from the States.
My boyfriend is going to Maine for school for a year (whom I wil be marrying following school), and I would like to go with him, however I would very much like to be able to work while I am there.
Is my only option to find an employer and have them justify hiring me? I am a graphic designer, not a nurse… or a doctor.
HELP?
or should I lose all hope?
I know there are other places better for design.
I am just trying to do whats best for my relationship at the moment… I can still do good design no matter where I am. Interesting design on the other hand can come later.

Actualy is not all lost!, one of the Benefits of Been Mexican or Canadian is that we are eligible for a visa known as TN, which stands for Nafta, all you have to do is find a job that requieres your degree, in these case Graphic Desing and thats good enough, I mean there is a bit of a process to it of course but its possible….

BTW maine sucks there are much more fun places to go and practice graphic design like say NY or CA, sorry if it sounded mean..
