Someone give me some details about joining the KATUSA in ROK army?

My korean is not proficient but my english is fluent. I can understand and talk in korean but not like my english. I hold a dual Australian and Korean Passport and i would like to join the ROK KATUSA program only if i am admitted to the program. Will my work there be sedentary(office jobs/translators) or can i fight alongside rok/american infantry in training?
When is the application date/how long do i have to wait for lottery results?
If i ace the english tests but my Korean aint too good, theyll still let me in?

I hear they are quite respected by american gis. I love the US and Korea so it would be awesome to fight alongside with fellow brethren!

I’m not sure how the selection process goes. I do know, that after you take your test and are selected (with your fluency in English you should have no trouble.) you attend ROK basic training, then go to KATUSA training (learning U.S D&C, how we operate ETC). After KATUSA training you will be sent to a U.S Unit, and your job depends on the needs of the unit. I was in a combat support battalion here in Korea, and our KATUSAs worked in office jobs. I have a friend currently in an armor battalion, and he told me some of their KATUSAs are tankers right along side our guys. You will more than likely be asked to translate for someone, whether it’s official business, or personal business for your fellow soldiers.

The biggest complaint i have heard from U.S troops about KATUSAs is how lazy they are. Don’t be “that guy” and you should have no problems. The KATUSAs i served with were hardly lazy, but they did have their ways to avoid certain duties. I still keep in contact with some of the KATUSA friends i made while serving in Korea and they say they loved the experience.

Good luck!
